U.S. and Iranian officials hold three-hour meeting as diplomatic efforts continue alongside military tensions

U.S. and Iranian officials held a three-hour meeting in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, marking a significant new diplomatic contact between Washington and Tehran.

U.S. President Donald Trump said his envoys, including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, held a “very good” and “very productive” meeting with the Iranian delegation. Trump said another meeting is expected soon and indicated that he believes there is momentum toward a possible agreement.

Iranian state media confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Witkoff. Iranian officials said the discussions included Tehran’s conditions concerning the Strait of Hormuz, including demands related to the U.S. naval blockade, frozen Iranian assets and the wider conflict.

The diplomatic activity comes as military tensions remain high. Trump used his UN General Assembly address to issue further warnings toward Iran while also saying that a negotiated settlement remains possible. Iranian officials have likewise maintained strong military rhetoric while indicating that diplomacy could resume under certain conditions.

Strait of Hormuz remains central to negotiations

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran could reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz within seven days if Washington eases military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports. However, the proposal remains conditional and a reopening of the Strait has not been confirmed.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy corridor, making developments surrounding the waterway closely watched by oil, fuel, shipping and financial markets.
