Washington and Tehran continue diplomatic contacts as oil markets react to uncertainty

UNITED NATIONS — Tensions between the United States and Iran remain high as diplomatic contacts continue on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the UN on Wednesday that Iran would not surrender to U.S. pressure while maintaining that diplomacy remains possible. His remarks followed strong warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump during his UN address.

The developments are being closely watched by global energy markets because continued uncertainty in the Middle East could affect oil supplies, shipping routes and refined-product markets.

Oil prices move higher

Oil prices rose during Wednesday trading as markets assessed the latest statements from Tehran and Washington. Reuters reported Brent crude futures at approximately $101.09 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was around $91.21 per barrel late Wednesday morning U.S. time.

The energy market remains particularly sensitive to developments involving Gulf shipping and the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international oil and gas trade.

China–U.S. talks also in focus

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting Washington for talks with President Trump from September 23–25. Trade, technology, Taiwan and broader geopolitical issues are expected to feature prominently in the discussions.

Global energy implications

The latest developments come as international fuel markets are already facing supply pressures. Reuters recently reported that the global diesel shortage could extend into 2027 as inventories decline, while Europe is also facing potential fourth-quarter jet-fuel supply constraints.

For energy traders, refiners, shipping companies and fuel buyers, developments in the Middle East remain a major factor to watch.
