G7 Announces 100 million-Barrel Emergency Fuel Release as Global Diesel Market Faces Severe Supply Pressure
October 2, 2026 — Global Energy Markets
The Group of Seven has agreed to coordinate the release of 100 million barrels of diesel, crude oil and other petroleum reserves through the International Energy Agency (IEA), in an emergency effort to stabilize global energy markets.
The release is scheduled to begin immediately and continue over four months, with a substantial portion of diesel supplies front-loaded during the first 20 days. The G7 also pledged to avoid energy-export restrictions among participating countries.
The decision comes as international fuel markets face unusually high volatility following disruptions to Middle Eastern energy flows. Diesel has become a particular concern for transportation, agriculture, industry and global logistics.
The announcement immediately affected petroleum markets. Reuters reported that U.S. diesel futures fell about 3.25%, while European diesel futures dropped roughly 5.75% after the reserve-release plans emerged.
At the same time, the global supply picture remains complicated. China has suspended most fuel exports outside Hong Kong and Macau for October, tightening gasoline and diesel availability in Asian markets and contributing to unusually strong refining margins.
Why this matters to the global petroleum market
The G7 decision does not necessarily solve the underlying supply problem. It is primarily an emergency measure designed to increase near-term availability and liquidity.
For petroleum traders, refiners, importers and logistics companies, the combination of:
emergency reserve releases;
restricted Chinese fuel exports;
continuing Middle East shipping risks;
elevated crude prices;
tight diesel availability;
changing refinery margins;
could produce significant changes in CIF diesel, gasoil, jet fuel and gasoline pricing across different regions.
Brent was still trading around the $100/barrel level, although prices moved sharply lower after the G7 reserve announcement. A live market source showed Brent around $102.44/bbl shortly before the latest update
